# Create Tasks (https://docs.carlio.app/docs/tasks/create-a-task)

Record a job with a type, a priority, a due date and a checklist

A task records one job that a team member or an outside assignee performs.

**Requirements:** the **Create Tasks** permission. The owner and manager roles hold it by default.

## Steps [#steps]

1. Open **[Tasks](https://carlio.app/dashboard/tasks)** in the sidebar.
2. Select **Add Task**. The **New Task** dialog opens.
3. Enter a **Title**. The title is required.
4. Choose a **Type**. The default is **Car Inspection**. The list groups the types under **Vehicle**, **Logistics**, **Paperwork** and **Sales**.
5. Choose a **Priority**. The default is **Normal**.
6. Optional: choose a date and time in **Due by**.
7. In the **Checklist** section, review the lines. Edit a line, select the remove button of a line, or select **Add a line**.
8. Optional: open the **Instructions and link** section and enter **Instructions** and a **Link**, such as an auction lot or a listing.
9. Optional: open the **Location and Contact** section. The fields are **Appointment starts**, **Appointment ends**, **Maps link**, **Address**, **Contact name**, **Contact phone** and **Contact email**.
10. Optional: open the **What it's about** section to link a car (**Vehicle**), a deal, a customer or a sales partner. The deal, customer and partner fields appear only for team members who may read those records.
11. Select **Create Task**.

The dialog closes and a message states the task number, for example **Task #T-12 created**. The task has the status **To Do**. It has no assignee. Assignment is a separate step, described in [Assign a task](/docs/tasks/assign-a-task).

## Checklist lines [#checklist-lines]

The checklist starts with the default lines of the chosen type. Changing the **Type** replaces the lines with the defaults of the new type. A type without a default list starts with no lines.

The dealership edits the default lists on the **Task Checklists** settings page. A change there applies only to tasks created afterwards.

The lines entered in this dialog are saved when the task is created.

## Other ways to open the form [#other-ways-to-open-the-form]

* The **New Task** option in the quick actions of the **Overview** page opens the same dialog.
* The **Start** button of the **Create a Task** step in the **Getting Started** checklist opens the same dialog.

## Edit a task [#edit-a-task]

1. Open the task page, or open the actions menu of a row in the task list.
2. Select **Edit**. The **Edit Task** dialog opens.
3. Change the fields.
4. Select **Save Changes**.

The message **Task updated** appears. Editing requires the **Edit Any Task** permission.

**Save Changes** also stores the lines of the **Checklist** section. A line whose text stays unchanged keeps its answer, its note and its photos. A new or reworded line starts without an answer. A removed line is deleted with its answer.

## Delete a task [#delete-a-task]

1. Open the task page.
2. Open the actions menu of the task and select **Delete**.
3. Confirm with **Delete task**.

<Callout type="warn">
  Deleting a task also deletes its checklist, comments, photos and history. The action cannot be
  undone.
</Callout>

The list of tasks also has a **Delete** option in the row menu. Deleting requires the delete permission, which the owner and manager roles hold.
