# Storage (https://docs.carlio.app/docs/settings/storage)

Read the storage meter, understand what counts toward the allowance and respond when space runs low

The **Storage** page shows how much of the storage allowance the dealership has used and what the space holds.

**Requirements:** Every team member can open the page. No permission is needed.

## Read the storage meter [#read-the-storage-meter]

1. Open **[Settings](https://carlio.app/dashboard/settings)**, then **[Storage](https://carlio.app/dashboard/settings/storage)**.
2. Read the figure at the top of the **Storage** card. The figure has the form "2.40 GB of 100.00 GB".
3. Read the text on the right of the figure. It shows the space left, for example "97.60 GB left".
4. Read the colored bar. One bar is split into one segment for each category.
5. Read the legend below the bar. Each row shows a category, the number of files and the size.
6. Read the line at the bottom. It shows the total number of files.

A category with no files does not appear in the legend. The card shows the text **No files are stored yet.** when the dealership has no files.

Storage sizes use binary units. One GB equals 1,024 MB.

## What counts toward the allowance [#what-counts-toward-the-allowance]

| Category | What it holds |
| ------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Photos** | Car photos and photos attached to tasks |
| **Videos** | Car videos and videos attached to tasks |
| **Documents** | Car paperwork, attachments on financial records, documents of customers and partners, task documents, documents uploaded through the customer and partner portals, and the PDF of each invoice |
| **Branding** | The company logo, the company cover photo and the invoice signature |

Profile pictures of team members do not count toward the allowance.

Uploads that are still in progress also count. The card shows them as a note, for example "12.0 MB reserved for uploads still in progress". The space returns on its own when the upload does not finish.

Files that task assignees upload through a task link count toward the allowance of the dealership.

Replacing a file at the same place, such as the company logo, counts only the difference in size.

## The allowance [#the-allowance]

The allowance equals the allowance of the plan plus any additional storage. When the dealership holds additional storage, the last line of the card reads, for example, "includes 50.00 GB of additional storage".

| Plan | Storage allowance |
| ------- | ----------------- |
| Starter | 100 GB |
| Trade | 250 GB |
| Export | 500 GB |

A dealership starts with an allowance of 10 GB until a plan sets the allowance.

## What happens near and at the limit [#what-happens-near-and-at-the-limit]

* At 90 per cent of the allowance, the space-left text is highlighted. A message states that the storage allowance is nearly used.
* At the limit, Carlio refuses a new upload. The upload fails with the message "Not enough storage". The message states the file size, the space left and the allowance.
* Files that already exist stay in place.
* When the dealership holds more than its allowance, for example after a change to a smaller plan, the card shows the amount over the allowance. No new file can be uploaded until space is released or the plan is upgraded.

To free space, delete files that are no longer needed. Deleting a car frees everything attached to it.

<Callout type="warn">
Deleting a car removes every file attached to the car. Delete a car only when none of its files is
  needed.
</Callout>

## What the reader sees at the end [#what-the-reader-sees-at-the-end]

The meter, the legend and the file count show the current state of storage.
