# Load Containers (https://docs.carlio.app/docs/exports/load-cars-into-a-container)

Assign cars to a container, arrange them in slots and remove them

Loading places cars with a shipping record into a container. The **Containers** workspace then shows each car in its slot.

**Requirements:** permission to update cars. Each car needs a shipping record. See [Record a shipment](/docs/exports/record-a-shipment).

## Assign cars from the exports list [#assign-cars-from-the-exports-list]

1. Open **[Exports](https://carlio.app/dashboard/exports)** in the sidebar.
2. Tick the checkbox of one or more rows. The bar above the list shows the number of cars selected.
3. Select **Assign to Container**. For a single car, choose **Assign to Container** in the row menu instead. The row menu offers **Move to Container** when the car is already loaded.
4. Choose **Existing Container** and pick a container in **Container**. Each entry shows the type and the number of cars loaded.
5. Alternatively, choose **New Container**. Enter the **Container Number**, choose the **Type** and choose the **Color**.
6. Choose the **Deck**: **Floor** or **Upper Rack**.
7. Select **Assign** followed by the number of cars, for example **Assign 2 Vehicles**.

The dashboard shows "2 vehicles assigned to the container". The cars join the end of the load, after the cars already inside. The **Container** column of the list shows the container number with its color. Select the number to open the container in the workspace.

## Remove cars from a container [#remove-cars-from-a-container]

* Select rows and choose **Remove from Container** in the bar above the list. The button appears when a selected car is loaded.
* Choose **Remove from Container** in the row menu of one car.

The dashboard shows "1 vehicle removed from the container". The record and the shipping details of the car stay unchanged.

## Arrange cars in the workspace [#arrange-cars-in-the-workspace]

1. Select **[Containers](https://carlio.app/dashboard/exports/containers)** on the **[Exports](https://carlio.app/dashboard/exports)** page.
2. Choose a container in the list on the left. The search field matches the container number, the car name, the VIN, the customer and the destination.
3. Drag a car to another slot of the side cutaway. A car dropped on an occupied slot swaps places with that car. A car dropped on an empty slot goes last on that deck.
4. Drag a car onto another container in the list to move it there.
5. Alternatively, select a car and choose **Move To** in the **Selected Vehicle** card. Right-clicking a car opens the same **Move To** menu with **Open Record** and **Remove from Container**.

A slot is named by its deck and number, for example "Floor, Slot 1". The **Manifest** card lists the cars of each deck in loading order.

## Read the load [#read-the-load]

The **Load** card shows the loaded cars against the capacity, the cars on each deck, the interior size and every destination in the load. A 20 ft Standard container draws 2 slots. The two 40 ft types draw 4 slots. Each deck holds half of them.

The label **Over Capacity** appears with the number of cars that exceed the drawn slots. Nothing prevents the extra cars. The cars past the slots are not drawn.

## Notes [#notes]

* A container that is archived cannot receive cars. Restore it first.
* Choosing **Remove from Container** in the workspace opens a confirmation. Select **Remove from Container** again to confirm.
* Saving a new **Container number** in the shipping record also loads the car into the open container with that number. See [Record a shipment](/docs/exports/record-a-shipment).
* Assigning a car to a container writes the container number into the shipping record when the number is a valid container number.
* Team members without permission to update cars can view the workspace but cannot move cars.
